Cruise & Learn - BVI


The BVI are a Caribbean paradise accessed through Miami and St. Thomas USVI. The BVI is consistently rated as one of the world’s top sailing destinations by SAILING and Cruising World magazines.



Course includes two courses per 7-day session:

Registration in two 7-day sessions will give you the opportunity to earn your internationally recognized Bareboat Charter Master Certification for chartering Monohulls and Catamarans.

Ideal 10-20 knot trade wind sailing, idyllic protected anchorages, lively resorts - a cruise & learn in the British Virgin Islands provides as much fun as you can handle! Here’s what you can expect on your sailing adventure in the British Virgin Islands.

Select a 7 or 14 day Cruise & Learn Adventure and harness the wind to take you to different ports-of-call each day.

Our first week is aboard a SUNSAIL Jeanneau 40/44i Cruiser. The second week is aboard a SUNSAIL Robertson & Caine Leopard 384 or Nautitech Open 40 Cruising Catamaran.

Stay-on and Skipper your first Bareboat Charter in the BVI- enjoy VSC discounted rates as first time Skippers.

There is also an option for Students achieving their Bareboat Charter Master Certification to continue for a second or third week with friends and family to Bareboat Charter. Ask one of our Instructors at our False Creek Office about the details of this option.

Sample Picture Itinerary for Week 1

On your travelling day meet the CREW at 6pm at SUNSAIL Yacht Charters in Road Town, Tortola. Learn how to provision your yacht and complete a Float Plan, chart review and safety Check-Out

Day 1- Demonstration and practice leaving the dock, maneuvering under power, sailing fundementals and Man Overboard (MOB) Recovery. Our first days destination is the "Indians" and the Bight Bay on Norman Island- exceptional snorkelling and dinner on the the schooner "Willy T" floating Pirate Bar and Seafood Bistro

Day 2- Review seamanship and the resposibilities of the Skipper and Crew. Practice taking and leaving a mooring. Under sail navigate around Peter and Salt Islands, moor in Manchioneel Bay for snorkelling, beach walk and dinner at the Cooper Island Beach Resort

Day 3- Practice Man Overboard (MOB) Recovery. A morning sail to Ginger Is. and Virgin Gorga Is. to hike the hidden paths and puzzling boulders of "The Baths".

After an exhilarating close-hauled sail up Sir Francis Drake Channel and navigating the narrow North entrance of Gorda Sound we arrive late afternoon at Saba Rock Resort seaside and take a couch on their famous seaside deck. A short dinghy ride to the Bitter End Resort Beach Pub for dinner and a glorious Caribbean sunset

Day 4- 15 nautical mile beam reach to Anegeda Island north from Virgin Gorda. we sail past Richard Branson's ( Virgin Enterprises) iconic Necker Island mansion

Anegeda lobsters ready for the Neptune's Treasure beach BBQ- it has consistently been the best lobster ever (sorry PEI, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia)!

Day 5- Practice our anchoring techniques. Prepare for heavy weather, a broad reach and several gibes to Jost Van Dyke Is. and Great Bay, home of the Corsair and Foxy's

Afternoon dinghy ride to the Soggy Dollar Bar, White Bay, Jost Van Dyke- origin of the BVI "PAIN KILLER" cocktail.

Next stop Foxy's in Great Bay for dinner, sunset and Reggae.

Day 6- Increase your sailing confidence by learning to prepare for heavy weather sailing and advanced sail trim. Mooring and snorkelling at Marina Cay Resort

Day 7 - Practice advancede sail trim and MOB recovery returning to SUNSAIL Yacht Charters and Resort in late morning.

Back to the docks by 11:00am for Check-in and disembark from the yacht. Seven days is never enough in paradise. Lucky ones continue on for 7 more days to see new ports-of-call and understand the skills required to charter a 40 ft Cruising Catamaran.
